The Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard is ideal if you don’t want a credit card, or can’t get one because you don’t have a bank account or your credit rating isn't strong enough.
Spend on it just like you would a credit card* and use it wherever you see the Mastercard sign.
You can use contactless to pay for items of up to £30, quickly and securely without having to enter your PIN, simply hold your card over the card reader. Look out for shops displaying the ‘contactless’ symbol.
The difference is you load it up with your money before you shop instead of paying off your balance later, so you won't spend more than you can afford.
You can choose from our 'Pay monthly' or 'Pay as you go' tariffs. So whether you plan to use your card a little or a lot, there’s an option to suit you.
*Although it looks like a credit card, the Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard doesn't offer some of the additional card protection on purchases that credit cards offer.
You can add up to 4 additional cardholders to your Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard account - you could give family members things like birthday cash or pocket money by loading it onto the card. It's also easy to keep a check on your family's spending, because you can check your account online anytime.
Maybe you want each member of your family to have a card for emergencies, or you've got big spending plans and want to make money available from separate cards.
It costs £4.95 for each additional card.
You can order additional cards through My Virgin Money once you have received your main card and created your online service account. Please note, additional cardholders must reside and be registered at the same address as the main cardholder.
If you lose your money, it’s pretty much gone for good. But if you lose your Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard it has chip and PIN built in, giving you greater protection against card crime. Having a PIN makes it harder for anyone else to use your card if it gets lost or stolen - you'll be protected against fraudulent use the moment you let us know.
And because there are no statements to be posted to you, there's less risk of your personal details going astray.
Because you can only spend the amount loaded onto your Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard, it’s really easy to stick to your budget.
Plus, you can keep track of what’s on your card at any time online, so you’re always in control of your money.
Buy an additional card for your family and if ever you need a little extra cash while you're abroad, they can load up your card with money from home.
Or if you have young family members and worry about them carrying money abroad, you can add them as an additional cardholder to your account. They'll have their own card and secure PIN, and you'll have peace of mind knowing you can always get money safely to them if they ever need it.
Prepaid cards are a great travelling companion because they are simpler and safer than carrying foreign money. If the card is lost or stolen your money is protected by the card's PIN and because the Virgin Money Prepaid Card is a Mastercard it's accepted pretty much everywhere. But if you're planning a trip abroad, the Virgin Money Prepaid Travel Mastercard - available in a choice of US Dollars or Euros - may be the right card for you. See how both cards compare.
When applying for a Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard, if we're unable to verify who you are, you'll receive a 'restricted card'.
Our restricted cards still come with all the same great Virgin benefits as the non-restricted cards, but there are a number of key differences to be aware of:
*Retailers such as Amazon, iTunes and PayPal are based overseas, which means our restricted card cannot be used to shop with them.
Just like the Virgin Money Credit Card, our Prepaid Mastercard can also get you exclusive discounts at Virgin companies and beyond.
Please note on the 'Pay as you go' tariff, discounts are applied before your 2.95% transaction fee. Remember to check the terms and conditions for each offer.
Please note: a Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard costs £9.95 to buy and both tariffs are subject to fees and conditions.
