Top questions and answers

If you have a repayment mortgage we have a decreasing cover option that pays out a decreasing amount over time – similar to the way a repayment mortgage balance reduces.

If you have an interest only mortgage, your mortgage amount stays the same until you repay it all at the end of the mortgage term. Level cover can help to protect this type of mortgage.

Please remember that this type of insurance only pays out in the event of death. It is your responsibility to have an appropriate repayment strategy in place to pay off the capital at the end of the mortgage term.

Of course it's up to you to choose the amount of cover you want and although we can't advise you, here are some of the things people often take into account:

  • How much their family would need to support themselves without their salary.
  • The size and term of their mortgage.
  • Any other outstanding debts.
  • How much cover they already have.

Or, sometimes a decision is made based on how much someone wants to pay each month.

You can experiment by getting a quote and then changing the term or amount of cover to see how much it would cost.

Yes, once your policy is up and running you can do this by filling in a trust form.

A trust simplifies the payout process by allowing any proceeds to be paid out quickly and can also protect those proceeds from inheritance tax (under current tax year rules).

If you'd like a trust form, please call us on 0345 604 3370.

If you're applying for joint life cover, you both jointly own your policy so any payout would go to your partner, without you having to put it under trust.

If your policy isn't written under trust, the proceeds may form part of your estate on death, and inheritance tax could be payable. If you're concerned about inheritance tax, you might want to discuss this with a tax expert. If you'd like a trust form, call us on 0345 604 3370.

Please note, we don't give advice on inheritance tax and this is based on our current understanding of tax rules which could change in the future.

If you have been diagnosed with a terminal or critical illness, or total permanent disability covered by your policy, you or someone you're close to can call us on 0345 604 3370 to talk through making a claim.

If you die, your family or legal personal representative should get in touch as soon as possible to find out what information is needed. To make a claim, please call us on 0345 604 3370.
