Some of our checks are obvious and others run in the background but we’re always working to keep your money safe. Here are 8 key ways we’re protecting your money.

1. Checking application info

Fraudsters try to open accounts in someone else’s name using fake or stolen details. Our fraud monitoring systems check that you are who you say you are when applying for an account with us.

2. Monitoring your account

If anything looks unusual, our fraud team might contact you. Sometimes we’ll delay or decline a payment to keep you safe.

3. Checking payment details

We check all the payment details you enter to make sure you’re paying the right person. If you’re using your debit or credit card, we’ll sometimes ask you to approve the payment.

4. Sending one-time passcodes (OTP)

We’ll send you a unique six-digit OTP number. You’ll enter the OTP when you register for the app, verify some requests that you make and to confirm it’s you when you make a payment.

It’s important you don’t share your OTP with anyone – even if they say they work for Virgin Money. And if you change your mobile number make sure you change it in our app too.

5. Getting your money back

If someone takes money from your account without your permission, we'll refund it. This is as long as you've kept your details secure. We've got your back if money goes missing without your consent. Check out your account terms for more info. Explore our online banking tips to protect yourself.

6. Showing your last sign in and we auto sign out

You can see the date and time your account was last viewed in the app and online banking. And, you’re auto signed out if you’re not actively using the app or online banking.

7. Blocking your account

We limit the number of sign in attempts with incorrect details. If there are too many attempts, we’ll block your account to keep you safe.

8. Securing your connection

We use encryption, and you’ll see a padlock and https:// in the address bar of our websites. This means the info you enter is private and shared with us securely.

When we contact you, keep this in mind

We’ll never:

  • ask you to move money to a ‘safe’ account
  • ask for any part of your PIN, password or one-time passcode
  • ask you to download software, access your device or share your screen
  • send emails with links asking you to enter personal or security info like your account number, PIN, password or security answers, unless you have asked to reset your password
  • call you and ask you to verify we work for Virgin Money online
  • call you and ask you to connect to live chat. Scammers use this trick to get you to visit unsafe websites.

We will:

  • add the second part of your postcode when we email you
  • occasionally contact you by email, phone or text to check a transaction you’ve made
