Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions about what happens when your prepaid card expires.

If your prepaid card is about to expire

To automatically receive a new Virgin Money Prepaid Card, just make sure you’ve used your current card within the 8 weeks prior to the expiry date shown on the front of the card and we’ll simply send you a new one for free.

If you haven't spent on your card in the 8 weeks prior to your card expiring, a small fee applies for requesting a new card (see Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard terms and conditions PDF link opens in a new window Link opens in a new window or the Virgin Money Prepaid Travel Mastercard terms and conditions PDF link opens in a new window Link opens in a new window for more details). This fee is simply taken from your prepaid card balance, so you just need to make sure there’s enough money available.

You can update your details any time when you log into Online Service, or call us on 0333 900 5005. If your Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard’s about to expire just make sure we have your current address before we reissue your card.

Any additional cards on your account will expire on the date shown on the additional card, but renewing them is easy.

Just call us on 0333 900 5005 within a month of the card's expiry date to renew your card. There will be a charge to replace your card if it has not been used within the last eight weeks of the card being valid. This fee will simply be taken from your prepaid card balance, so you will need to make sure you have enough money available on your card at the time.

Don’t worry, any outstanding balance on your old Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard will simply be transferred to your new one. Until the date your old card expires, you can use either your old or new card to access the money.

If your prepaid card has already expired

If your Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard has already expired you can still request a new one by calling us on 0333 900 5005. Don’t forget to tell us if you’ve changed address.

  • If you have a Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard you can load it online using a credit or debit card, Paypoint e-voucher or via a bank transfer.
  • If you have a Virgin Money Prepaid Travel Mastercard you can load it online using a credit or debit card.

Remember, if your card has expired you will need to contact Customer Services. You can still load your card with money but you will not be able to use it for spending until you have been issued with a replacement card.

If you don’t want to renew your Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard but have an outstanding balance left on it, just let us know by calling 0333 900 5005 and we’ll arrange for this to be refunded to you.

Please note:

Yes, you can access Online Service at least 12 months after your card’s expiry.

If there’s any balance left on your Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard you’ll be able to access Online Service for up to 6 years following expiry or until the balance has been refunded.

Other frequently asked questions

Your new Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard(s) will take two weeks to arrive.

If your salary is being paid onto your Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard and your card is about to expire or has expired, don’t worry – your salary will still be paid into your prepaid account as normal.

Any refund(s)- for returned goods will simply be added to your prepaid card balance and the money will be accessible as soon as the funds have been received, this will depend on when the refund was processed by the merchant and can take up to 7 days

Both your old and new Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercards are active until your old one expires, so you can use either to access any balance on your account.

To activate your new Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard just call us on 0333 900 5005.

Don’t forget to sign the back of your card as soon as it arrives.

Yes. When your new Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard arrives you’ll need to activate it and call us for your new PIN – all the details will be in the letter that comes with it.

If you want to change your PIN to something more memorable you can do this at most UK cash machines. Just select the relevant option and follow the instructions on screen. (You’ll need to remember the PIN for your new card to do this).
