Shopping with Mastercard®

Mastercard logo

You can use your card at millions of shops, restaurants and petrol stations worldwide, wherever you see the Mastercard logo. You can also use your card to shop online or over the phone.

Transaction authentication

A new regulation is being introduced across the industry to help protect you from fraud. You might hear it called Strong Customer Authentication or SCA. SCA will add an extra level of security when you shop online to confirm your identity. We might need to send you a text with a one-time passcode, you’ll need to enter this before you can complete your purchase.

Contactless payments

Contactless symbol

You can pay for items of £100 or less, quickly and securely without having to enter your PIN, simply hold your card over the card reader.

Look out for shops displaying the ‘contactless’ symbol (above). To start using contactless payments, you will be asked to authorise your card by entering your PIN the first time you use it. To find out more visit myvirginmoney.com/contactless.

Every now and then you will be asked to confirm your identity , by completing a transaction using your PIN.

24/7 fraud detection system

Transactions are actively monitored around the clock to prevent fraud, and your account is checked for unusual activity or suspicious spending patterns. We will contact you if we notice anything unusual. If you notice anything unusual on your account, please call us on 0800 011 3210*. We’re here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and we’ll be happy to help.

*Calls to 0800 numbers are free from personal mobile phones and residential UK landlines. Calls will be monitored and recorded.

Using your card abroad

You can use your card in most countries around the world for shopping and withdrawing cash where you see the Mastercard® logo. Before you go away, please call us to let us know when and where you are going so we can make a note on your account. Remember to check that we have your most up to date contact details when you call, just in case we need to contact you while you are away.

Additional fees

With many cards, when you use your card outside the UK you will pay:

  • A Non-Sterling Transaction Fee if you make a purchase or cash advance, unless it’s in Euros, Swedish Kronor or Romanian Lei when you’re in one of the countries of the European Economic Area (EEA) or you’re using our travel card, as Non-Sterling Transaction Fees never apply for this card.
  • A Cash Advance Fee if you withdraw cash. This fee will always apply regardless of the country you’re in or the currency you withdraw.
