The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) currently advise against all but essential travel to Iran, Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar and the UAE. They also advise against all travel to Israel.
We know many customers are dealing with cancellation and changing travel advice. It’s important to check the latest guidance for your travel destination on the foreign travel advice page on GOV.UK Link opens in a new window.
If your travel plans are affected, you should first contact your airline or travel provider. They’re responsible for helping you with refunds, rebooking or finding alternative arrangements.
To help you understand how your Virgin Money travel insurance is affected, we’ve brought all the key information together in one place.
What if I’m already in an affected country?
If you’re unable to return to the UK due to the conflict, your cover will be automatically extended until you’re able to return using a government approved route.
Follow the advice of local authorities, and make your presence known to the relevant government services where instructed. For the latest guidance on what you should do, read the foreign travel advice updates on GOV.UK Link opens in a new window.
If you need emergency medical help, please contact our assistance team as normal. Your medical and personal accident cover remains in place while you’re planning to leave.
Am I covered if I decide not to travel?
There is no cover if you decide not to travel.
If your travel plans have been affected, contact your airline or travel provider. They’re responsible for helping you with refunds, rebooking or finding alternative arrangements.
What if I change my plans?
If you have single-trip policy and decide to rearrange your holiday to a new destination or different dates, you will need to contact us to update your policy. This may come at an additional cost.
If you have annual travel insurance with us you’ll still be covered if you change your plans.
Cancellation or Curtailment (cutting my trip short)
If your trip is a package holiday, then you should contact your holiday provider.
Your provider is also responsible for arranging alternative accommodation for you if you need to leave your booked accommodation early.
If your holiday has been cancelled, ABTA members will discuss your options with you, which could be the offer of an alternative holiday or a refund for the cost of the package holiday.
If you booked your holiday arrangements separately and your flight has been cancelled, you should be entitled to a refund for your flight from your airline. You will then need to look at the terms and conditions for your other bookings such as accommodation and transport to see whether your provider will refund your costs.
There is no cancellation or curtailment cover for events caused by acts of war, as set out in your policy wording.
What if I haven’t bought my travel insurance yet?
This conflict is now considered a known event, which means any new policies will not cover claims relating to it.
Travel insurance doesn’t provide cover for travel to any destination where the FCDO advises against travel.
