SIM swap fraud (also called SIM hijacking) happens when a fraudster tricks your mobile provider into transferring your phone number to a SIM they control. This lets them intercept calls, texts and security codes to access your bank accounts or apps.

What are the red flags?

  • Sudden loss of mobile signal (for example, “No Service”)
  • Alerts about password resets or account changes you didn’t make
  • Login attempts or security code requests you didn’t trigger
  • Bank or app alerts for transactions you didn’t make

How to protect yourself

  • Use strong, unique passwords for all your accounts
  • Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) using an app (like Google Authenticator) rather than SMS
  • Set up PINs or passcodes with your mobile provider for account changes
  • Be cautious of calls or texts asking for personal information
  • Monitor your accounts regularly for unusual activity
