SIM swap fraud (also called SIM hijacking) happens when a fraudster tricks your mobile provider into transferring your phone number to a SIM they control. This lets them intercept calls, texts and security codes to access your bank accounts or apps.
What are the red flags?
- Sudden loss of mobile signal (for example, “No Service”)
- Alerts about password resets or account changes you didn’t make
- Login attempts or security code requests you didn’t trigger
- Bank or app alerts for transactions you didn’t make
How to protect yourself
- Use strong, unique passwords for all your accounts
- Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) using an app (like Google Authenticator) rather than SMS
- Set up PINs or passcodes with your mobile provider for account changes
- Be cautious of calls or texts asking for personal information
- Monitor your accounts regularly for unusual activity
