Meet Aaron Taylor

Get to know Aaron Taylor, one of our first ever Emerging Stars.

R&B/Soul singer Aaron Taylor is one of our Virgin Money Emerging Stars, and we’re very excited to have him on board. Aaron is a London born and raised singer-songwriter, artist and producer who makes “groovy beats, heartfelt ballads”. He’s already racked up tens of millions of streams and has been compared to the greats like D’Angelo. Aaron’s always known that music is the only career for him – it’s what gets him most passionate and has done since he was young. Here’s your chance to get to know him a little bit better.

Hi Aaron,

how would you describe yourself in three words?

Calm, patient and positive.

Who inspired you to make music?

Growing up I was inspired by soul, R&B and gospel. People like Lauryn Hill and D’Angelo.

Why do you think music is so powerful?

It transcends science, it’s spiritual – a universal language.

What’s been the highlight of your career so far?

When I headlined a sold-out Jazz Café (also my favourite UK music venue) and heard the fans singing the words to my song without being prompted.

Best and hardest thing about being in the music industry?

The best is having the appreciation of your musical ideas, and the hardest is inevitably comparing yourself to everyone else.

How important is it to support emerging musicians and what can we do to show support?

Musicians may be among the last people to get back on their feet after COVID-19. Many venues and festivals remain closed and cancelled and live shows make up an important part of the industry’s income. So, keep streaming and downloading, buy any merchandise available and spread the word about any artists you like – any support is really appreciated.

Which emerging artists are you listening to at the moment?

I think Amber Simone is really talented and someone to have on your radar.

How important do you think social media is when it comes to building your profile and audience?

It’s the easiest way to market your music now. It’s important to plug into the platforms that work for you. I like Instagram the most, but I’m also on Twitter and plan to use my YouTube channel more too.

What are your top three tips for how to connect with your followers on social media?

Be authentic, so that you have followers that like you for who you are, post regularly for the sake of algorithms and be positive – spread joy, humour and comfort.

If lockdown lifted tomorrow and you could see one artist/band perform live, who would it be and where?

Anderson .Paak is great live, and in Brixton Academy because it’s local.

Do you think lockdown has had any positive impacts on your life?

It’s been positive in teaching me not to take things, people and health for granted. I’d like to continue not having to leave the house unnecessarily, too!

How have you stayed connected to friends, family and fans during lockdown?

Video calls have been great for that. And just picking up the phone and calling people rather than sending a message has been lovely.

And now time for some quick-fire questions…
