Craig Charles is a man of many talents. Fondly remembered for his performances as Lister in Red Dwarf and Lloyd in Coronation Street, he’s just as passionate about music as he is about acting, hosting a regular BBC Radio 6 show, The Craig Charles Funk And Soul Show, which has gained a cult following for its eclectic mix of get-up-and-boogie classics. He’s also a solid live performer, delivering a phenomenal socially distanced DJ set at this summer’s Virgin Money Unity Arena. You can get a taste of it through the Spotify playlist he curated for us, and below are some of our favourite songs from it. Enjoy.
Sister Sledge – Lost In Music?
This disco and R&B hit from Sister Sledge takes us right back to 1979. A trance-like beat and feel-good vibes penetrate through this instantly recognisable classic. Nile Rogers’ skilful production on the track is beautifully partnered with the chic harmonies of the iconic sisters, who infuse the song with their trademark Studio 54-style glamour.
Deee-Lite – Groove Is In The Heart
Imagine living in a world where this song didn't exist! Actually, don't… because that doesn’t bear thinking about. This song beams with pure energy and delight, and its playful slide whistle is simply unforgettable. It's a feel-good sing-along classic that can brighten the dullest of days and put the groove back into even the heaviest of hearts.
Stevie Wonder – Sir Duke
Stevie’s ode to the power of music reflects the happiness that music brings into our lives. Its superb composition is made up of an array of trumpets, whistles, drums and guitars - but Stevie's vocals never feel overpowered by the song's high tempo and blaring beat. The result is a track that beams with joy and is most definitely a crowd pleaser at any wedding reception.
Sarah Vaughan – Peter Gunn Max Sedgley remix
This electro-jazz remix showcases the stunning vocal range of American Jazz Singer Sarah Vaughan. Whilst many would argue that you shouldn't tamper with a bona fide classic, there's something catchy and enticing about this remix, which adds an incredible pace to the music, without taking away from Vaughan's stunning vocals.
Pete Rodriguez - I Like it Like That
This infectious Latin Boogaloo hit is firmly cemented in popular culture – nobody can resist its all-consuming raw and ecstatic energy. Recently sampled in Cardi B's number 1 hit ‘I Like It’, it's clear this euphoric song isn't going anywhere any time soon, which is great news because listening to it makes you feel like you are at the best party of all time.
