Records tumble at 2019 Virgin Money Marathon thanks to charity runners

Virgin Money London Marathon (VMLM) runners can look back on yet another record-breaking event as 2019 smashed all previous fundraising totals.

Runners raised over £25.5m million for charity through Virgin Money Giving, the not-for-profit fundraising partner of the London Marathon, and the total is expected to top £28m million as donations continue to come in.

The Virgin Money London Marathon is the world’s biggest annual one day fundraising event. It is estimated that over 2,000 charities will benefit from fundraisers taking part in this year’s 26.2 mile spectacle.

Jo Barnett, Executive Director at Virgin Money Giving said: “For the past ten years we’ve been breaking fundraising records. I am absolutely delighted that Virgin Money Giving and the Virgin Money London Marathon have done it once again. More fundraisers than ever have used Virgin Money Giving to support their charities this year and for the first time their supporters have been able to track them and give directly through the Marathon’s official app as well as the usual channels. Donations continue to pour in and the runners can rest assured that more of their hard won donations will reach their selected good causes because of our low fees and not-for-profit model.”

The 2019 VMLM charity campaign of the year was the Dementia Revolution, which saw Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer's Research UK join forces. Over 2,000 runners hit the streets on Sunday for Dementia Revolution and have already helped to raise over £3m for groundbreaking dementia research. This included friends and ex-castmates of Dame Barbara Windsor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2014. The group, known as Barbara’s Revolutionaries, ran alongside her husband Scott Mitchell and have raised over £133k to date.

It was incredible to see so many people take to the streets of London for our once-in-a-lifetime campaign – from the runners, to the people cheering them on. While the Dementia Revolution will now come to an end, it will have a lasting impact on everyone affected by dementia.”

Scott Mitchell, Dame Barbara Windsor’s husband whose team Barbara’s Revolutionaries raised more than £133k for the Dementia Revolution, said: “Since Barbara’s diagnosis, I have often felt so powerless because there is no cure for dementia. But running the Virgin Money London Marathon for the Dementia Revolution has given me an incredible opportunity to make a stand against dementia. Thanks to Virgin Money and this campaign, we’ve been able to raise much-needed awareness of the condition and power the research that will lead us to a cure.”

More than three-quarters of all runners at the London Marathon run to raise money for charity because they, or someone close to them, has experienced illness or tragedy, and they want to honour someone’s memory, or give something back to the organisations and charities which helped them. For many, taking on the marathon is just one challenge in a whole host of others over a period of time, or merely one stage in an ongoing fund-raising campaign; for others, it’s the climax of a personal journey.
