Virgin Wines' guide to BBQ drinking

The perfect BBQ is about superb wine as well as delicious food – let this guide get you summer-ready

If you’re like us, you’ll soon be thinking about rolling up your sleeves and cooking up a storm on the BBQ. Whether you’re catching up with friends or family or simply just relaxing out in the sunshine, the perfect BBQ isn’t just about delicious food but superb wine too.

So why is finding the perfect wine important?

The flavours found in different foods and wines can easily complement each other and tantalise the taste buds, making the dining experience even better.

Here’s our guide to pairing BBQ food with fantastic wine.

The classic burger and a light-bodied red

There’s a common misconception that red wines don’t have a place at a BBQ. A beautiful light bodied red such as a Pinot Noir adds a splash of fruitiness to the palate making it a great match with a delicious burger.

Packed full of berries and currant flavours, another wine to discover is a Shiraz. Fuller-bodied than the Zinfandel, Shiraz complements meat dishes and will invigorate your senses with its aroma.

A quick tip: to make the most of your bottle of red, chill the wine down to room temperature on a hot day for the best impact.

Chardonnay and grilled chicken

Looking for a real crowd pleaser? Chicken is perfect for those who prefer a lighter option at a BBQ and works really well when paired with a refreshing unoaked Chardonnay.

Chardonnay can offer a variety of flavours including lemon and mouth-watering tropical fruit making it the perfect match for chicken dishes. It’s also known to bring out any herbal flavours added whilst cooking making it definitely a winner in our eyes!

A quick tip: love cocktails? Give your Chardonnay a summery twist by adding soda water or lemonade to make a delicious spritzer.

Fish and a white wine or rosé

Let’s be honest, sometimes there’s nothing better than grilling a delicious sea bass over the BBQ. All you need is a drizzle of olive oil, some seasoning and that’s it, absolutely gorgeous! If you love sea bass as much as we do, you can’t go wrong with a wine full of zesty flavours such as Sauvignon Blanc.

Or if you fancy ringing the changes this year, try using a fish with vibrant flavours and a meaty texture like salmon. Pair it with a light salad, some crunchy new potatoes and a glass of dry rosé and you’ll have all of the ingredients of a great BBQ.

A quick tip: did you know that keeping a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc in the fridge with a screw cap will make it last longer?

Grilled vegetables and a Merlot

The perfect finishing touch to any BBQ dish, or just as amazing on its own, grilled vegetables can offer colour and of course delicious flavour.

Whether you’re a fan of grilled asparagus or corn on the cob, try pairing them with a beautiful Merlot, full of fresh fruity flavours with a raspberry and plum aroma.
