What if I already have a Virgin Atlantic MasterCard?

You can apply for the Virgin Atlantic American Express® Credit Card if you’d like to as well.

Just fill in the online application or give us a call on 0800 056 5576.

How do I apply?

You can apply on this website. It’s easy, only takes a few minutes, and is totally secure.

If you prefer you can apply over the phone by calling 0800 056 5576.

Will I definitely get a card?

That’s certainly the aim. However, we take our responsibilities as a lender seriously so we do have to take into account your age, status and financial background.

How long does it take to get a decision on my application?

When you apply over the internet we aim to give you an 'instant decision'. This means that your application can be approved online making the whole thing paperwork free. You'll receive your card within 10 days once approved, so you can start collecting your miles as soon as possible.

Sometimes it is not possible to give you an instant decision (if you apply over the phone, at certain times of the day or if we need to ask you for more information). In these cases, you should hear from us within 7 - 10 working days after we receive your application.

How do you decide my credit limit?

The limit given is based on personal circumstances. If you’ve got a high salary and low debts, you’re more likely to get a higher credit limit.

Can I service my credit card online and over the phone?

You can run your Virgin Atlantic Credit Card account 24/7 using our online service or by calling us anytime on 0800 015 0306 - whichever is easiest for you.

Balance transfers, card purchases and credit card cheques

Is it easy to transfer a balance from another card?

Transferring a balance is easy and only takes a few minutes to set up online or by calling us on 0800 854 767.

Remember though, the introductory balance transfer rate lasts for six months from the date your account is opened (2% handling fee applies), not from the date you transfer your balance. So if you transfer in month five, that’s only one month at the special rate. It pays to transfer balances as soon as your account is up and running.

Also, as the Virgin Atlantic American Express® Credit Card is issued by MBNA, you can’t transfer a balance from another credit card issued by them (including any other Virgin Credit Cards).

Where can I use my Virgin Atlantic Credit Card?

You can use your Virgin Atlantic Credit Card wherever you see the American Express® logo.

You can withdraw cash from all LINK cash machines, including Halifax, Lloyds TSB, Barclays, HSBC and Bank of Scotland.

Please note, you can only withdraw money from cash machines, not over the counter.

For up to date information or advice on using your credit card worldwide or to withdraw cash, please call our customer helpline, available 24 hours a day on Freephone 0800 056 7686.

Will I get any credit card cheques?

Yes - we’ll send you some soon after your card’s approved. These can come in handy for situations where credit cards aren’t accepted, e.g. when staying at your favourite B&B or paying some household bills.

Take care when using them though, as payments by credit card cheque aren't protected by the same credit laws as payments made with the card itself. For instance, if you've bought something from a company which then goes bankrupt - you can get your money back. But you might not get your money back if you've paid for the goods by credit card cheque.

There’s also a fee for using your cheques. See the summary box when you apply for full details, or call us if you’re unsure.

Flying Club miles

How do I earn Flying Club miles on my card?

Miles are earned for each whole pound spent on each card purchase.

You'll earn either 1 mile for every full £1 you spend on your ‘White Card’, or if you have chosen the ‘Black Card’ with a £115 annual fee, you'll earn 2 miles for every full £1 spent on each card purchase.

Every time you buy from Virgin Atlantic or Virgin Holidays, you’ll earn double miles for each full £1 spent. So if you’ve got the no-fee card, you’ll get 2 miles, and if you’ve got the fee card you’ll get 4 miles.

Please note, you must have provided MBNA with a valid Flying Club number in the name of the main account holder at the time your monthly statement is generated to earn your Flying Club miles.

When will my Flying Club miles be added to my account?

Every month your credit card statement will show you the number of miles you have earned in that month. These will then be automatically credited to your Flying Club account.

To spend them, call the Flying Club helpline on 08701 61 60 59 or log on to www.virgin.com/flyingclub for more information.

Please note, you must have provided MBNA with a valid Flying Club number in the name of the main account holder at the time your monthly statement is generated to earn your Flying Club miles.

How do I spend my Flying Club miles?

You can spend them in the same way you spend Flying Club miles you earn elsewhere, by choosing from a huge variety of rewards on offer from Virgin Atlantic, including flights with Virgin Atlantic and partner airlines, spa days etc.

How do I qualify for my Premium Economy upgrades?

Spend £10,000 on the White Card or £5,000 on the Black Card in a year to receive a Premium Economy reward upgrade on an Economy redemption booking.

When you’ve spent your next £10,000 (£5,000 for Virgin Atlantic Black Card holders), you can do it again. You can do this up to twice a year, every year.

How do I qualify for my complimentary companion reward flights?

If in a year you spend more than the minimum amount (£15,000 if you’ve got the Virgin Atlantic White Card, £7,500 if you’ve got the Virgin Atlantic Black Card) you'll get a complimentary companion reward flight the next time you book a qualifying flight with Virgin Atlantic.

A year means 12 months from the date your account is opened.

Please note, the minimum spend amount needs to be on card purchases (that doesn't include balance or money transfers, cheque payments or cash transactions).

You can have one complimentary companion reward flight each year, if you’ve spent enough - but remember, if you haven't given us a valid Flying Club number for an account in your name you won't be able to claim your flight.

Interest and charges

Where can I find out about the charges and interest rates?

You’ll find detailed information about our charges and interest rates in the summary box of your Virgin Atlantic Credit Card before you apply.

The APR we mention stands for Annual Percentage Rate - basically the amount of interest you’ll be charged on card purchases over a year.

You’ll be charged a special balance transfer rate on any balance you transfer to us during your promotional period, until your promotional period expires*. After that, you’ll be charged the standard balance transfer rate on any of the balance still outstanding.

The same applies for any purchases made on your Virgin Atlantic Credit Card. Purchases made during the promotional period will be charged at the special promotional purchase rate until the promotional period ends. Then the standard APR will be charged to any purchases still to be paid off*.

If you don’t pay off your balance in full, we’ll use what you do pay towards paying off items that have the lowest rate of interest first. Then we’ll use anything that’s left to pay off items on a higher rate of interest. This is particularly handy to know if you’ve transferred a balance to your card, and then use your card for cash withdrawals*.

*Your repayments will be allocated to balances at the lowest rates first. If you have balances attracting the same promotional rate, we will allocate your repayments to the balance at the promotional rate which ends first.

Security

Is it a secure chip and PIN card?

Yes - every card comes with chip and PIN built in, giving you the most up-to-date protection against card crime.

Having a PIN makes it harder for anyone else to use your card if it gets stolen or lost.

When you get your card, your PIN will follow in a different envelope. You will then have the option of changing your PIN to one you find easier to remember.

Can I choose my own PIN?

Yes, you can change your PIN at any time to a number you find easier to remember. This can be done at most cash machines.

Just follow the on-screen instructions, but remember not to choose anything obvious like 1 2 3 4 or your date of birth.

Switching cards

Can I change my mind later if I want the other version of the Virgin Atlantic American Express® Credit Card?

If later on you wish you had the other card, simply apply for it. You can keep your other Virgin Atlantic Credit Card as well, or close it by paying off the balance in full.
