The UK's most holiday-friendly town

Looking for a holiday in the UK?

Lots of people are going away to various towns in England instead of abroad this year, due to the ongoing recession. But which towns in the UK are the best for tourists? Virgin Travel Insurance has checked it out, and here are the details.

Bournemouth comes in top spot for travel destinations, based on the average weather, cost of a week in a hotel, price and availability of restaurants, quality of beaches, and overall cost and number of nearby tourist attractions.

If you're not into Bournemouth though, check out Brighton, Portsmouth, London and Scarborough - they all work out as having the best value for money and number of things to do while you're away.

But if you're thinking about a trip to Loch Ness, maybe think twice. It scored bottom on our list of tourist hot-spots due to bad weather and a small number of attractions and restaurants.

If eating out is your thing, then obviously travelling to London is a good bet for the availability of restaurants in the area - but Glasgow, Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham are all great for food, too.

But if you just fancy staying in a nice hotel for a week, as well as the obvious choice (London) check out Torquay, Exeter, Stratford-upon-Avon and the Cotswolds.

Remember, if you are going away this year, don't forget your travel insurance - Virgin Travel Insurance covers your stay in the UK, if you are away for two nights or more.
