Summer holiday demand still strong

The effects of the recession are being shrugged off by holidaymakers determined to keep their summer break, it has been reported.

According to The Independent, holiday company Thomas Cook has posted better than expected results, with underlying pre-tax profits for the year to September remaining steady at £308.2 million.

The firm also remains optimistic about the coming year, with destinations such as Turkey and Egypt expected to be popular as customers continue to shun the Eurozone due to the weakness of the pound.

Chief executive Manny Fontenla-Novoa commented, “Recent customer research shows that UK holidaymakers remain intent on taking their holidays abroad next summer.”

Online community TravelMole also reported how Thomas Cook was looking to expand their opportunities in Russia and China, both of which are expected to see greater tourist activity over the next few years.

"In Russia, we seek to establish a strong presence early on and would expect to leverage our destination strengths, particularly in Turkey," Fontenla-Novoa said.

"However, in China, we believe it is essential to first establish a foothold to gain experience," he continued.
