Brits label Spain 'not foreign enough'

Many British holidaymakers are finding Spain to be too reminiscent of home, The Times has reported.

According to a survey by online travel agent sunshine.co.uk, 59 per cent of the 1,327 people questioned felt that the number of British bars and tourists in popular Spanish coastal resorts made the country seem 'not foreign enough'.

Only 32 per cent answered that the sense of familiarity added to Spain's appeal for them.

Julia Fossi, co-owner of English restaurant Fish and Chips Barcelona, commented, "We mostly get Spaniards in, or some local Brits. Not the tourists."

The number of Britons visiting Spain in 2009 fell by 15 per cent compared to the previous year, figures from the Spanish Tourism Institute have revealed.

Traditionally, resorts such as Benidorm, Torremolinos and Fuengirola have been popular hotspots for British holidaymakers.

Virgin Money offers travel insurance for those still interested in Spain, or for travellers branching out into more exotic destinations.
