US entry fee looking likely

26/03/2010

A new tourism tax for foreign holidaymakers travelling to America could be put in place by the end of the year, The Daily Mail has reported.

An overwhelming majority at the US Senate is said to have voted in favour of the Travel Promotion Act (TPA), which would fund future tourism marketing campaigns by charging visitors $10 each.

Speaking about the TPA, Visit USA chair Kate Burgess Craddy said, “It’s still a very small proportion of the cost of a holiday and it’s also quite comparable to what many other countries will often charge for visa tax or departure and arrival taxes.”

It was also reported that the number of Britons travelling to America decreased from 4 million in 2008 to 3.8 million in 2009.

Currently, US-bound Brits are required to complete a form under the Electronic Scheme for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) at least 72 hours prior to travelling.

Virgin Money offers great rates on travel insurance for those heading to the States.
