UK travellers back full body scanners
21/06/2010
The vast majority of UK travellers support the use of full body scanners at airports, MSN.com has reported.
According to a survey by IT company Unisys, 90 per cent of the UK public are in favour of the scanners, compared to just 45 per cent of people in Hong Kong, and 24 per cent in Mexico.
10,000 people across 11 countries (Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, the UK and the USA) were questioned as part of the study.
Neil Fisher, Unisys global security solutions vice president, commented, “With airport operator BAA also reporting positive responses to the full body scanners, it appears that the early controversy surrounding the technology has died down and people are taking a pragmatic approach to their safety.”
91 per cent of UK respondents also answered that they would be willing to submit biometric data, such as fingerprints and iris scans, when travelling by air.
