UK colder than European ski resorts
15/01/2010
Winter sports enthusiasts may not have to look any further than the UK in order to indulge their passion as the recent cold spell has led to parts of the country having lower temperatures than some European ski resorts.
According to MSN.com, while January 6th 2009 saw temperatures of -8ºC in St. Anton, Austria, and -12ºC in Davos, Switzerland, Benson, Oxfordshire recorded a low of -17.7ºC.
This made the village of Benson only 2 degrees warmer than the South Pole, which is currently in the height of its summer season.
Michael Dukes, MeteoGroup forecast manager, commented, “We have had more extreme winters in the past. But this will be the third coldest half of winter, meaning December and half of January, that we have had in 30 years.”
In December 1995, Altnaharra, in the North West Highlands of Scotland, saw temperatures dip as low as -27.2ºC.
Those wanting to escape the cold of the UK and head abroad could benefit from a Virgin travel insurance policy.
