Popular York street named Britain's most picturesque
31/03/2010
A narrow, cobbled street in York has been named as the most picturesque in Britain, The Guardian has reported.
The Shambles, which takes its name from the medieval word 'shamel', meaning bench, received the honour courtesy of the Google Street View Awards and its 11,000 voters.
The street is already popular with visitors, and is lined with a number of shops, restaurants and cafes.
Shop owner Ian Addyman commented, "There is a real feeling of community among shop owners and I think we all feel privileged to work in such a beautiful place."
As well as The Shambles, the Jorvik Viking Museum, York Minster Cathedral and Roman remains are all popular tourist attractions within York, and help the city attract around 4 million visitors every year.
Those taking a break in York, or any other UK city, can benefit from value-for-money travel insurance from Virgin Money.
