A new survey has shown that people are taking more precautions to protect themselves against travel problems this holiday season.

Many people are more prepared following a year in which the travel industry has been hit by airline strikes, the ash cloud, and holiday company collapses.

According to the research, carried out by money transfer company Western Union, a fifth of travellers are taking both their credit card and debit card on holiday, or a mixture of cash and travellers' cheques.

The survey showed that 18% of holidaymakers are opting to take their vacation at home this year, while more than one in 10 (13%) are paying using their credit card to offer more protection.

And 13% of people are carrying operator and tour details around with them while on holiday in case anything goes wrong.

The poll also showed that an extra 8% are taking out holiday insurance this summer when normally they do not bother, or upgrading their policy.

According to the survey, 32% of people encountered problems on their most recent holiday abroad, with the most difficulties coming in Spain followed by the USA, France and Greece.

Around a third of the 18 to 24-year-olds in the survey took a holiday to celebrate the end of their exams.

Of these, 15% ran out of money on their trip, 15% suffered severe sunburn and 14% had luggage or belongings stolen.
