Duty free not always cheap
14/06/2010
Holidaymakers hoping to pick up duty-free bargains at the airport may be better off buying certain items from their local supermarket, research from mysupermarket.com has found.
According to The Telegraph, confectionary was significantly more expensive in duty free shops, with a 400g bar of Toblerone costing £5.00 at the airport, compared to £2.00 in the supermarket.
Mysupermarket.com spokesman Jonny Steel commented, “Many holidaymakers are still under the illusion that products in duty free always represent good value which is sadly not always the case.”
However, airport shops were still the best when it came to purchasing alcohol, the research found.
A one litre bottle of Famous Grouse was nearly 31 per cent more expensive when purchased from the supermarket, while buying a one litre bottle of Glenfiddich from a duty free shop could have saved customers £4.24.
