Brits struggle to spell holiday destination

21/01/2010

A survey by a budget accommodation firm has revealed the difficulty Britons have in spelling their holiday destination correctly, The Telegraph has reported.

The research, carried out by Travelodge, found that among the 5,000 people surveyed, Morecambe was the most commonly misspelt destination, with 70 per cent using variations like 'Morecome' and 'Morecombe'.

Approximately one in five also struggled to spell Torquay, Scarborough and Bournemouth, with spellings such as 'Tourkey', 'Scarbrough' and 'Bornmouth' frequently appearing.

Spelling Society spokesman Dr John Gledhill commented, "Britons consistently underperform in spelling tests regarding everyday words which include popular British locations.

"Correctly spelling a location can be more difficult because a place name may be a preservation of an old spelling that made sense at the time the place was named but has little bearing on today."

Male holidaymakers were also more likely to misspell place names than their female counterparts, the survey found.

Virgin Money offers travel insurance to cover holidays to destinations both within the UK and further afield.
