A poll has shown that 80% of Britons are willing to forgo their monthly spend on luxuries in order to go on holiday, with women keener to make sacrifices than men.

According to online travel agent ebookers.com, more than half of the 4,000 UK adults polled said they were ready to sacrifice a night out or the latest gadget, such as the iPhone 4, or designer goods to save enough to pay for their holidays and travel insurance.

Meanwhile, a poll by another online travel agent sunshine.co.uk found that five of the top 10 most popular foreign resorts chosen by holidaying Britons this summer are in Turkey, indicating the growing popularity of the country.

Marmaris in Turkey tops the list, followed by Egypt's Sharm el Sheikh and Spain's Benidorm in the second and third places respectively.

The four other Turkish resorts in the top 10 are Olu Deniz (sixth), Icmeler (seventh), Hisaronu (ninth) and Gumbet (10th).

Chris Brown, co-founder of sunshine.co.uk, said: "I think the fact that five out of the 10 busiest holiday destinations are Turkish resorts says a lot about the growing popularity of the country.

"I very much believe that the reason Egypt and Turkey have risen in popularity is down to the fact that their main currency is not the euro."
