Beach litter decreasing
16/06/2010
The amount of litter on Britain’s beaches is falling, a survey by the Marine Conservation Society has found.
According to The Guardian, the research indicated that the overall number of items left on beaches in 2009 was 342,000, down 16 per cent from the previous year.
However, there was concern over the percentage of plastic litter, which rose to 64 per cent, as plastic is particularly harmful to the environment, continually breaking down into smaller pieces rather than degrading.
Marine Conservation Society litter projects coordinator Emma Snowden commented, “Every bit of litter has an owner. We can all help by not dropping or throwing it out the window, by taking a cloth bag to the supermarket, by refilling water bottles.”
