Bank Holiday danger warning
- Car claims rise by 14% during May Bank holiday, says Virgin Money
Drivers heading off for Bank Holiday day trips – weather permitting – this weekend should take extra care as they as they are facing an increased risk of a car insurance claim, warns Virgin Money.
Its analysis shows drivers are more at risk over the Bank Holiday with a 14% increase in claims on the May Bank Holiday Monday compared with average Mondays.
With up to 16 million drivers* hitting the roads over the weekend the risk of an accident increases dramatically.
And Virgin Money warns that with more people expected to hit the roads to get away for the weekend claims could again rise this year.
Planned road works taking place over the Bank Holiday weekend could also dent people’s ambitions to get behind the wheel this weekend.
Grant Bather, spokesman at Virgin Money, said: “For many people Bank Holiday Monday will involve sitting behind the wheel and taking a trip in their car but they should take care.
“With over 16 million motorists on the roads during the May Bank Holiday, car incidents are more likely and drivers should be extra vigilant whether they are heading for the beach or a DIY store.
“With many people also taking long journeys to see family or friends, they should make sure that their car is properly prepared. Drivers should check the oil and water levels before they head off on a long journey and make sure that their tyres are adequately pumped up.”
Virgin Money recently revealed that Swansea topped the league table for the most car incidents in 2008, with Leyton and Widnes making up the top three for car insurance danger zones.
