Life Insurance - Life cover that gives you added peace of mind

Who can apply?
Anyone aged between 18 and 64 who is permanently resident in the United Kingdom (excluding the Channel Islands and Isle of Man).
Can we get joint cover?
Yes. You can apply for one plan that covers you and your spouse, partner or someone you share a financial commitment with. The cash sum is payable on the first death or the first diagnosis of a terminal illness during the cover term. If the cash sum is paid, the cover ends.
You can get joint cover with either a level or decreasing term.
Can I cover my mortgage?
Yes.
If you've got a repayment mortgage we can set up your cover to decrease during the term, similar to the way your mortgage goes down. It will make your premiums cheaper.
If you've got an interest only mortgage, your mortgage amount stays the same until you repay it all at the end. Level cover is designed to cover this type of mortgage.
If you have any concerns about whether your insurance is enough to cover your repayment mortgage please call 0845 602 9199.
If you've got a mix of both of these types of mortgage, please call 0845 602 9199 to talk through your options.
What do you mean by 'terminally ill'?
This means that you've been diagnosed as being expected to die in the next 12 months.
If this were to happen your full cover amount would be paid out as a cash sum.
Please note, you can't make a terminal illness claim during the last 18 months of your cover term.
Can I change my cover in future?
Yes. Just call 0845 602 9199 to talk through the options available to you.
How much cover should I get?
It depends on your circumstances but here are some things to take into account:
- How much your family would need to support themselves without your salary.
- The size of your mortgage and how long it has got to run.
- Any other outstanding debts you have.
Alternatively, you could consider how much you want to pay each month.
You can put that in our quick quote and see how much cover you would get for your money.
If you have any questions, please call 0800 917 5071.
How long should I get cover for?
People often take out insurance until the date they intend to retire, or their mortgage is paid off, or their children grow up and leave home.
Working back from your important date will help you decide how many years of insurance you need.
Can I start my cover now?
Yes, we can start your cover as soon as your application is accepted.
You can also ask for a start date that can be up to 30 days from the date of your mortgage offer.
How can I pay?
By monthly direct debit.
Will my premiums change?
No, once your cover has started your monthly payments will stay the same for the full term unless you change your cover.
Why do you charge different premiums for men and women of the same age?
The probability of a man making a claim under a policy is different to that of a woman, so the cost of insurance also differs.
What's 'free life cover'?
If you're buying a house, you can get up to 90 days of free life insurance up to £250,000 to cover you between exchange of contracts (or if you're buying in Scotland, from the date the missives are concluded) and mortgage completion.
That way you're protected but won't have to start paying for your insurance until your mortgage starts.
Please note, free life cover doesn't apply to remortgages and doesn't provide cover for terminal illness.
What's 'free accidental death cover'?
If you apply for life cover, you'll automatically have up to 60 days of free accidental death cover when your application is received by Friends Provident, subject to conditions. This means you’re automatically covered for accidental death while your application is being assessed.
Can I choose who gets the money if I die?
Yes, once your policy is up and running you can do this by filling in a trust form.
This simplifies the pay-out process if you die and may protect the pay-out from inheritance tax (under current tax rules as at 2009).
If you’d like a trust form, just call 0800 917 9700.
If you’re applying for life cover with a partner, you both jointly own your policy so any pay-out would automatically go straight to your partner, without you having to put it under trust.
If you're considering inheritance tax planning, you might want to speak to a solicitor about how best to set this up.
Are pay-outs taxed?
Both terminal illness and life claims are paid tax free but in some circumstances inheritance tax may be payable.
You can normally avoid this by putting your plan under trust once your policy is up and running. You can do this by filling in a trust form – if you’d like one, just call 0845 266 3645.
Will I get any money back if I don't die before the end of the term?
No, the policy provides life and terminal illness cover only and there's no cash-in value. At the end of your policy term, you stop paying premiums and your cover ends.
