The garden of the average Briton contains items worth £825, according to a new survey which looks at the level of home insurance people have for their properties.

The OnePoll survey revealed that people are most likely to have patio furniture in their garden, spending an average of £121 on tables and chairs, followed by plants and flowers costing around £111.

The third most popular garden accessories are barbecues, with two-thirds of people having one, each costing around £64.

Meanwhile lawnmowers cost around £141 and sheds and greenhouses hit an average of £123.

Homeowners often have gardening tools worth around £141 and decking costing £104, while parents typically keep £50 worth of children's toys in the garden.

Three-quarters of those questioned said their outdoor space was their favourite part of their home, while a third said they spent more money on their garden than any other area of their property.

But the researchers warned homeowners to check that the contents of their garden were covered by their home insurance.
