Technology 'could prevent jams'

The integration of hi-tech systems could ease transport congestion, saving the UK £12 billion a year, according to a report.
The Automotive Council has produced the research, which highlights how combining existing and new technologies along with infrastructure and all forms of transport would create "intelligent mobility".
Up until now, the organisation points out that technologies and transport systems have been developed in isolation, but changing this pattern could create a safe and more streamlined network.
The report states how doing so will pave the way for better routing of traffic and more predictive travel, while cutting down congestion by between three to five times in places.
Sitting in traffic for long periods haemorrhages money and with car insurance costs among the things drivers need to budget for, any petrol savings that can be made on quieter roads will be a relief to motorists.
Researchers found that Britain's growing population, with older people and their personal mobility needs, is piling pressure on transport networks.
The report also warned that, although it is costly, failing to meet the ongoing demands on infrastructure could seriously impair economic activity.
