Drivers urged to check tyres regularly

The majority of Britons are clueless when it comes to tyre safety, a survey has revealed.
Two-thirds do not know what the minimum legal tyre tread is, while just over half of those quizzed do not know what pressure their tyres should be inflated to.
While it takes just a matter of minutes to ensure than your car tyres are safe to drive on, failure to do so could prevent motorists from securing good deals on car insurance if they are involved in an accident caused by under-inflated or threadbare tyres.
Unipart Car Care Centres, which conducted the survey of 2,000 motorists, advises that drivers require a tyre tread of 3mm during winter, although the legal requirement is 1.6mm.
Although the weather has been somewhat mild in recent weeks, winter has arrived and motorists are advised to be prepared for difficult driving conditions caused by snow, fog and ice in the coming months.
The survey also revealed that only just over 12% check their car every few weeks.
Tim Ferris, Unipart Car Care Centres panel chairman, said: "By just taking 10 minutes every week to carry out simple checks, drivers can be more confident that their car is roadworthy and safe."
