Although an EHIC form covers the cost of treatment for most medical emergencies in an EU country, it doesn't include things like ambulance or air-lift call-outs and the cost of getting home. And if you have to cancel a journey or cut it short because of illness, you'll need to take out travel insurance if you want to be covered.
Remember the same holiday glitches that travel insurance helps you out with can still happen to you in the UK.
Though the good old NHS is there for you to cover medical needs, it won't help you a jot if your valuables are stolen, or compensate you if your journey's delayed or if you have to cancel your trip because of ill health.
If you've got annual travel cover you won't have to worry about sorting out insurance each time you pop off for a romantic long weekend snuggled up in a hotel (and let's face it, who bothers?). You'll just have extra peace of mind knowing your handy annual plan will help you out of a pickle if you need it.
Check out the policy document for what's covered when you travel in the UK.

If you've got annual cover, you betcha. Our 'couple' and 'family' policies automatically cover you all independently on your travels. So you'll be insured for that weekend in Wester Ross with your friends, and Jack and Poppy will be insured on their school trips.
With single trip cover, obviously you cover people going on the same trip. So you're not covered for other, independent trips.
It depends on the activity. For example under our annual cover you're insured for abseiling, but not mountain biking. Check out our policy wording to find out exactly what you're covered for.
For single trip policies, you can tag on 'additional activities' cover if you like.
