Questions and answers

Am I eligible?

If you can answer YES to the following questions:

  • Are you 18 or over?
  • Do you live in the UK?
  • Do you have a bank or building society account?

How do I apply?

You can apply on this website. It’s easy, only takes a few minutes, and is totally secure.

If you prefer you can apply over the phone by calling 0800 096 9939. Lines are open 7.30am - 10pm Mon to Fri, 8am - 9pm Sat, 9am - 9pm Sun.

Will I definitely get a card?

That’s certainly the aim. But like all responsible credit card companies we have to take into account your age, status and financial background. If you have a poor credit rating your chances of getting your hands on a credit card (including Virgin’s) are pretty slim.

If you have a reasonable salary, low debt and no history of missed payments, the better your credit rating, so it’s easier to get a credit card.

How high a credit limit do you give?

Up to £50,000, but that is exceptional. Each application is based on personal circumstances. If you’ve got a high salary and low debts, you’re more likely to get a higher credit limit.

How long will it be before I hear?

If everything is okay, we aim to have a card in your hand within 7-10 working days.

If you have any questions in the meantime, contact our customer helpline on 0800 015 0306.

Can I service my credit card online and over the phone?

Sure thing. You can check on your card balance, statement and recent transactions, pay household bills or transfer a balance, all online.

Or you can call us on 0800 015 0306. Our card service team work 24/7 all year round, so there’ll be someone here even if you lose your card and call us on Christmas Day.

Naturally you’ll also get your regular monthly credit card statement through the post.

Is it easy to transfer a balance from another card?

It’s a doddle. It only takes a few minutes online, or by calling us on 0800 015 0307.

Remember though, the introductory balance transfer rate lasts for fifteen months from the date your account is opened (2.98% handling fee applies), not from when you transfer your balance. So if you transfer in month fourteen, that’s only one month at the special rate. So it pays to get your balance transfer in early doors.

Also, as the Virgin Credit Card is issued by MBNA, remember you can't transfer a balance from another credit card issued by them.

Where can I use my Virgin Credit Card?

You can use your credit card at 20 million shops, restaurants, petrol stations and over 1 million cash machines in most countries throughout the world.

For up to date information or advice on using your credit card worldwide or to withdraw cash, please call our Customer Satisfaction Helpline, available 24 hours a day on freephone 0800 015 0306.

Is it a secure chip and PIN card?

Yep. Every card comes with chip and PIN built in, ensuring you enjoy the most up-to-date protection against card crime. Having a secret PIN makes it harder for anyone else to use your card if it gets nicked or lost.

When you get your card, your PIN will follow in a different envelope. You’ll have the option to change your PIN to one you find easier to remember.

Where can I find out about the charges and interest rates?

You'll find detailed info about our charges and interest rates in the summary box of your Virgin Credit Card before you apply.

APR stands for Annual Percentage Rate, basically the amount of interest you'll be charged on your borrowing over a year.

You'll be charged the balance transfer rate on any balance you transfer to us during your promotional period, until your promotional period runs out*. After that, you'll be charged the typical APR on any of the balance still outstanding.

The same goes for any purchases made on the Virgin Credit Card. Purchases made during the promotional period will be charged at the purchase rate until the promotional period ends. Then the typical APR will be charged to any purchases still to be paid off.

On cash transactions you'll be charged the higher rate 24.9% APR*.

If you don't pay off your balance in full, we'll use what you do pay towards paying off items that have the lowest rate of interest first. Then we'll use anything that's left to pay off items on a higher rate of interest.

It's particularly handy to know this if you've transferred a balance to your card, and then use your card for cash withdrawals.

*There is a handling fee. See the summary box for full details.

How is my balance paid off?

Any payment you send us will be used towards paying off your card transactions at lower rates of interest first (e.g. promotional rates on balance transfers or card purchases), and then transactions at higher rates of interest. Where you have two promotional rates which are the same, we will use your payments to reduce the balance with the longer promotional period first.

Please note, this applies whether or not the lower interest rate transactions have appeared on your statement yet.
